Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how HanziHover ("we", "our", or "the
Extension") collects, uses, and protects your information. We are
committed to being clear and transparent about our data practices.
Information We Collect
HanziHover is built to collect as little as possible. Here's
everything that exists:
-
Account email. If you choose to create an account
(email + password) so you can save words, your email address is
collected and managed by our backend provider,
Supabase, for authentication purposes only.
-
Word bank entries. If you save a word, we store
the word (simplified and traditional characters), its pinyin, its
English definitions, the date you added it, and the URL of the
page you were reading when you saved it. This is stored in our
Supabase database, tied to your account.
-
Nothing else. We do not collect browsing history,
page content, analytics, or any data about pages you have not
explicitly saved a word from. Looking up a word's pinyin and
definition happens entirely offline, using a dictionary bundled
with the Extension — no lookup is ever sent anywhere.
You can use HanziHover's core hover-lookup feature fully
without creating an account. An account is only
required if you want to save words and sync your word bank across
devices.
How We Use Your Information
-
Your email is used solely to authenticate you and let you access
your own word bank.
-
Your saved words are used solely to display and manage your
personal word bank within the Extension.
-
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any
purpose other than providing the features described above.
Third-Party Services
HanziHover uses
Supabase
to provide account authentication and to store word bank data.
Supabase acts as our database and authentication provider; we do not
share your data with any other third party, and we do not sell your
data to anyone.
Data Storage and Security
-
Word bank data and account credentials are stored in our Supabase
project, protected by database-level access rules (Row Level
Security) that ensure you can only ever access your own saved
words.
-
Your session is stored locally in your browser via the Chrome
Extension storage API and is not accessible to the websites you
visit.
-
We do not access, read, or share your word bank data except as
needed to provide the service or respond to a support request you
initiate.
Your Rights
-
Access: View all of your saved words at any time
from the Extension's "View Word Bank" page.
-
Deletion: Delete individual saved words at any
time from that same page, or request deletion of your entire
account and all associated data by contacting us (see below).
-
Portability: Request a copy of your stored word
bank data by contacting us.
-
Opt-out: Use the core lookup feature without ever
creating an account, avoiding data collection entirely.
Children's Privacy
HanziHover is not directed at children under 13, and we do not
knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
